Travelling is something we’d all love to do more of, but can seldom find the time or money to do. However, if you’re planning on taking a trip anytime soon there are a few things you can do to cut back on spending.
Here are 10 thrifty travel tips for when you’re travelling on a budget
10. Pick a B&B over a hotel. You’ll find them all over the world and a bed & breakfast offers twice the hospitality and comfort of a hotel at half the price. Just be sure to book well in advance as they tend to fill up quickly during holiday season or big events.
9. Avoid tourist traps. Overpriced and busy restaurants, shops, landmarks and other tourist destinations cost substantially more than local hangouts. By visiting spots popular with the locals you’ll still be able to take in everything the area has to offer but at a fraction of the price.
8. Don’t use rental cars. Using a rental car to travel in a foreign country can be tricky as well as costly. Rather opt to use trains, busses and taxis to get around.
7. Use guidebooks. Guidebooks don’t cost much and they can help you find the best and most affordable travel locations and attractions. You can find guidebooks at most airports, but always make sure you are buying the most up to date version.
6. Travel off-season. Travelling off-season means cheaper hotel rooms, cheaper restaurants, less crowds and less queues. This is especially true for bigger cities and the more popular destinations.
5. Leave home healthy. Getting sick abroad can not only ruin your holiday, but can also get very expensive. Rest well directly after your flight as jet lag can easily lead to a flu.
4. Use ATMs rather than travellers checks. You’ll get your cash cheaper and faster, just remember that ATMs do charge transaction fees so minimise your costs by making fewer withdrawals.
3. Only pay with cash. While you may get a better exchange rate using cards, some of the places offering the best deals, like craft shops or B&Bs, only take cash.
2. Avoid travel agents. Instead of visiting travel agencies, who always take a commission, rather do your own research. Consult guidebooks, the internet and shop around.
1. Eat with the area. Know which foods are local and in season, as these are usually the cheaper option. Avoid imported or out-of-season foods.
