The last time Sony released a smartphone was back in 2015 with the Sony Xperia Z5, and now the Japanese tech giant is realising a more cost-effective model later this year.
The Sony Xperia E5 is part of Sony’s mid-range smartphone range and is reported to be selling for around R3999 once released in August of this year.
Sony’s biggest challenge will undoubtedly be standing out in a market that is already saturated with competition. Other mid-range smartphones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the Nokia Lumia 920 both retail for less than R5000 and are considered some of the best mid-range smartphones available in South Africa today.
So how does Sony plan on standing out from the crowd? Firstly, the Xperia E5 has a rather impressive camera for a mid-range smartphone. The rear camera is an impressive 13MP, and the front camera comes in at 5MP.
Sony usually delivers quality cameras on all of their smartphones, so it’s nice to see them carrying on that tradition with their mid-range devices.
The sleek and familiar Xperia design is still there, and the phone weighs in at only 147 grams. The only colours available will be black and white.
While not the ideal phone to run high-demanding games or applications, this Sony Xperia E5 is still an ideal everyday device. It comes with 16 GB of internal memory, and can be upgraded to 200 GB with a memory card. It also uses the MediaTek MT6735 internal processor, which is considered to be a more high end processor among mid-range smartphones. It also comes with the Android Marshmallow OS right out of the box.
All-in-all, the Sony Xperia E5 is the ideal phone for those who are either looking for a simple “everyday” phone, or for someone looking to spend a little less on a smartphone than what the current top-of-the-range smartphones currently retail for.
