Skincare 101: Micellar Water – What is it & Should You Be Using it?

0

We all love trying new beauty products but with so many fabulous new (and old) products on the market it’s impossible to figure out what we should be trying and what we shouldn’t waste our money on. Although it has been around for a little while now, micellar waters is still an enigma to many women. But what exactly is micellar water and should you be adding it into your beauty regime?

What is micellar water

If you’re a low-maintenance lass, or lad, who adores multi-tasking products then micellar water could be the product you’ve been searching for! This wonder product has a liquid consistency that mostly looks like water but while the product may look simple it’s actually got a whole lot going on under the surface.  Micellar water is made up of micelles (microscopic balls of oily cleansing agents) along with a few additional ingredients suspended in soft water. Additional ingredients can be added to treat certain skin concerns such as hydration, sensitivity, or even even oiliness.

Micellar water is ideal for those with sensitive skin and can also help to keep your skin’s pH balance healthy. While harsher cleansers can disrupt your skin’s pH level and compromises your skin’s protective barrier, micellar water is more likely to be free from or contain lower concentrations of potential skin irritants like fragrance and alcohol.  Using a gentle micellar water for cleansing day and night can help reduce dryness, redness and breakouts on the skin, whether you have sensitive skin or not.

How does it work?

Micellar water is known for being an incredibly effective and gentle cleanser. The product has a lightweight consistency very similar to water and when it is applied to the skin, dirt, oil and make-up attach to the micelles and are removed from your skin. The product is also super simply to use – simply apply a small amount of micellar water to a cotton wool pad and wipe it over your skin until it’s clean. That’s it – there’s no need to rinse your skin afterwards, you simply apply your serums and moistener on top and you’re done.

Which micellar water should I use?

Most micellar waters on the market are similar in their make up and ingredients but there are, however, different variations for different skin types. If you have oily, dry, or sensitive skin, it’s important to use a micellar water that is suited to your skin type.

While for some micellar water is the ideal replacement for their traditional cleanser, many women prefer to continue to use their usual cleanser and instead introduce micellar water as a pre-cleanser or makeup remover in the evenings to ensure their skin is squeaky clean and fresh.
