Top Health Benefits of CBD

0

For thousands of years, the cannabis plant has been widely used for various medicinal purposes. But in terms of today’s standards, medical experts continue to conduct studies on the efficacy of CBD use for medicinal purposes. There is a lot we still don’t know about CBD and as a result, there are many rumours about the plant and its many uses. Most recently, this humble plant has been the subject of extensive global research, with some interesting facts emerging helping to separate fact from the fiction, with numerous uses now being given the ‘nod’ of approval by medical researchers.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the health benefits of this natural remedy:

Cannabis 101:

CBD is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids that can be extracted from hemp or marijuana plants. Unlike Marijuana, which contains high levels of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC), hemp is naturally very low in THC (about 0.3 percent). This makes it ideal for everyday use in terms of beauty, skincare, and health.

While CBD oil and hemp oil may well come from the same plant, CBD oil is made using the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant while hemp seed oil comes from the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant and is made by cold pressing the seeds to release the oil inside. Hemp oil does not contain CBD. The stalks, leaves, and flowers contain a higher concentration of CBD, and while the seeds may not contain the same compounds as the plant itself, they still have a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive compounds.

Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD is a great option for those looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs. The oil has become a popular choice for those looking for a more natural way to treat the likes of anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, epilepsy, arthritis and even seizures. But, thanks to its powerful healing properties the oil has become wildly popular for treating an even wider list of daily health and beauty concerns.

With its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production, CBD Oil has also been found to help treat acne, muscle aches, headaches, and relieve symptoms of sunburn and bug bites when used topically.

Of course, for those who would rather not ingest CBD in oil form, it can also be taken in capsule form as a health supplement. Today CBD is used in many oral supplements to help improve sleep, mood, and concentration. It has also been shown to help treat cardiovascular disease, inflammatory diseases like arthritis and IBD, diabetes and even nausea.

A milestone for CBD use in South Africa

At the end of May 2019, Cannabidiol was officially been removed from South Africa’s list of highly-controlled drugs. Health minister, Aaron Motsoaledi lowered CBD from Schedule 7 to Schedule 4 on Thursday, 23 May 2019. The minister stated that “low-dose CBD products” will be completely unregulated for the next twelve months. This change in classification meant that low dose CBD preparations were now legal to sell in South Africa by anyone, without a prescription.

Fast forward to 2020. In the amended Government Gazette, dated 22 May 2020, regulations state that CBD preparations containing a maximum of 20 mg per daily dosage, may be sold in South Africa as SO Complementary Medicines, opening up new treatment options for South Africans seeking natural relief for a number of ailments.
