New Apple AirTags, iMacs, & Apple TVs Coming to SA

0

If there’s one thing Apple users love it’s an upgrade, and luckily for Apple fans there’s loads of new stuff coming our way this year. Apple held an event on 20 April to announce its new lineup of products and the presentation gave us a sneak peek at some pretty big upgrades to Apple TV, iPads, iMacs, as well as an exciting new product called AirTags. Apple users in South Africa can expect to find the new range of products in the Republic soon. Here’s everything you need to know.

Apple AirTags

Perhaps one of the most exciting announcements of the day was the new Apple AirTags — a tracking device similar to the Tile. The device is a small circle that you can attach to your keys, luggage, or pet, and it uses the iPhone’s Find My feature to track down your item. These nifty little tracking devices tap into the vast, global Find My network and can help locate a lost item, all while keeping location data private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption.

The new tags will available to purchase in one and four-packs for $29 (approx. R450) and $99 (approx. R1,500), respectively, and will be available beginning Friday, 30 April 2021.

New iMacs

Apple iMac 2021

For this launch, Apple has completely redesigned the iMac. The computer is now powered by Apple’s M1 processor, which the company released last year, meaning it runs a lot faster and more quietly than the current model iMacs. At just 11.5mm, the new iMacs are Apple’s thinnest desktop computers yet. The new models also feature a 4.5K retina display, and True Tone and TouchID on the keyboard, enabling you to easily sign in with your fingerprint.

The new iMac offers a bit of nostalgia with a throwback to the colourful iMacs of the 90s and will be available in seven colours: green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver.

The new iMacs will be available to order from 30 April,  at a starting price of $1,299 (approx. R18,500).

New Apple TV — plus a redesigned remote

Apple TV

Apple users can also upgrade to the new Apple TV. This latest iteration is only the fourth major update to the device since it was first launched in 2012. This latest upgrade has a faster A12 Bionic chip with a big focus on picture quality, optimised for 4K streaming and better HDR frame rate.

The new device will enable the user to adjust the TV’s colour settings through their iPhone, using the phone’s colour and light sensors to adjust the Apple TV colour balance. Launched alongside the new device is a new Apple TV remote. The old remote is notoriously bad but this upgrade features an extra dial button that looks like the classic iPod click wheel to replace the slippery touchpad. There’s also a mute button, a more obvious “back” button, and even a power button. It’s also slightly thicker and bigger, so it’s less likely to slip between the couch cushions and get lost.

For those who have the older iterations of Apple TV, and aren’t ready to fully upgrade their device, the remote will be sold separately for $59 (approx. R850).

The new Apple TV will retail for $179 (approx. R2,500) for the 32GB version and $199 (approx. R2,800) for the 64 GB.
