Get set for some fishy fun: The famous Sardine Run takes place between May and July and it’s truly a sight to behold. The waters just beyond the breakers churn with hundreds of thousands of sardines on their annual mass migration, attracting frenzied seabirds, dolphins, sharks and game fish – all competing for their slice of the pie. Humans get stuck in too, so if you fancy a sardine or two on the braai, you’be hard pressed to not come away with a bucket-load of bounty.
However, if you fancy something rather more tranquil, the warm waters of the Hibiscus Coast are an angler’s dream. If you’re a fisherman, head for the rocks or to boats that are regularly launched from local ski-boat clubs and cast off. Twitchers, flock here! The Hibiscus Coast is a bird-lover’s paradise. Bring your binoculars, lace up your hiking boots and head for the Southern KZN Birding Route, or visit the Oribi Gorge and Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. You’ll be able to see some game along the way as well.
Have a shot of adrenaline: Oribi Gorge is a must for thrill-seekers. Take a death-defying flip on the world’s biggest bungee swing, scale down the highest natural commercial abseil on the planet and hike some of the most breath-taking trails in the Southern Hemisphere.
And if golf is your game… you’re in luck too! The Hibiscus Coast is also referred to as the “golf coast” and there are seven courses dotted around the area, including two of the top courses in the country. Many offer majestic views of the Indian Ocean, so you can drink in the vistas while you tackle your tee. Don’t forget your golf clubs!
