Whether we like it or not, wearing sunscreen is a must for all of us — especially in the summer months when we’re spending loads more time outdoors. Of course, not all sunscreens are created equal and finding one you love can be pretty much trial and error. So, to help take the chore out of finding the right sunscreen for your skin this summer we’ve put together an easy guide to buying sun protection and have also included some of our favourite sunscreens for all skin types and lifestyles.

Opt for the highest SPF possible

If you’re spending the day at the beach then you’ll want to reach for an SPF30 or higher and make sure you reapply every hour or after you’ve taken a dip. Dermatologists and skincare experts recommend that the average adult apply at least a shot glass full of sunscreen to the body when out in the sun, so make sure you don’t skimp on the sun lotion.

Make sure it’s skin safe

When shopping for sunscreen choose an option that is hypoallergenic (meaning it’s kind to sensitive skin) as well as non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores). This will ensure you don’t have any nasty breakouts or reactions after spending the day applying sunscreen.

Choose a mineral, not chemical sunscreen

Recent research suggests that chemical sunscreen may be destroying the marine ecosystem, so if you’re heading into the ocean, be sure to use a mineral sunscreen rather than a chemical one. According to a 2015 study in Hawaii, ingredients found in chemical SPF—specifically oxybenzone, which appears in over 3,500 well-known sunscreens — pose a serious threat to marine life worldwide. When shopping for SPF, check the ingredients before you buy and opt for a mineral sunscreen wherever possible. In general, the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens tend to be the most harmful to both your skin and the planet. Avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene. Consider your skin type
