Gems in SA’s Crown

0

“I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the flowers, the seas and the ever-changing seasons that define the face of our native land”. – Thabo Mbeki

This quote constantly ran through my mind while on a recent weekend getaway and reminded me of the abundance of natural beauty that South Africa has to offer. There are so many little towns and villages just waiting to be explored, that locals and tourists alike are spoilt for choice when planning a break.

Less than two hours from the city, these are some ideas of places where you can unwind, no matter the season:

Parys

Situated in the Vredefort Dome (which has been declared a world heritage site), Parys is a tranquil town filled with all the charm of yester-year. Known as the jewel of the Vaal River, it offers something for everyone. From river rafting and abseiling for the adrenaline junkies, to antique stores and coffee shops for the more romantic and laid back.

Umhlanga Rocks

A mere 20 minutes from Durban’s city centre, Umhlanga Rocks is a seaside town that offers some of Kwazulu-Natal’s most beautiful beaches. Home to the largest mall in the southern hemisphere, the town also has plenty to offer surfers and water sport enthusiasts.

Greyton

Dubbed the prettiest town in the Western Cape, a visit to Greyton will make you feel like you have stepped back in time. Offering something for everyone, it has a Saturday morning market where locals sell everything from homemade cheese and jams to books. There are even horse and cart rides for the kids! Outdoor adventurers will not be left disappointed when visiting this town, approximately 1.5 hours from Cape Town, as there are mountain biking and hiking trails that will leave you breathless.
