LG might have a new flagship smartphone out in the form of the G6 but that doesn’t mean that it’s abandoning its mid-range K series.
The company has announced a new K10 handset for 2017.
The new K10 is essentially the flagship handset in the K series but despite the metallic looking edges, this is no high-end smartphone, nor does it need to be.
In a press release, LG South Africa says that the K10 2017 “will re-define your opinion of the affordable smartphone.”
It has a 5.3-inch 720p display, 2GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a 13MP rear facing camera and a 5MP front facing camera, all of which is powered by a 2800mAh removable battery.
The K10 is an all plastic affair, despite the metallic looking finish. However it does feature a fingerprint scanner on the back, a feature that used to be found exclusively on high-end handsets.
The scanner replaces LG’s famous rear key which used to be found on the company’s previous flagship devices and also doubles up as a power button.
The display is bright and fairly clear but thanks to its 720p resolution, it’s not going to blow you away in the same way that the G6’s QHD+ display will. What does make the new K10’s display even more interesting is the in-cell technology which means that the touch panel will continue to work even if the glass is broken.
In terms of the camera setup, the 2017 K10 has a single 13MP lens and a 5MP front-facing wide angle lens.
LG says that the rear-facing 13MP camera has innovative features such as “zero shutter lag, Quick Share functionality, a 1/3.06″ sensor and an ultra-bright F2.2 lens for low-light scenarios.”
The 5MP 120 degree selfie camera includes features like Auto Shot and improved gesture support, this lets you set a 3-second timer with a single hand gesture, or take four consecutive selfies with a second hand gesture. The K10 2017 will also automatically take a photo one second after its owner’s face is recognised.
