Who would buy a PlayStation that can be a phone? Honestly, I would consider it. The mobile gaming space is hot at the moment. Sony, who has dominated the gaming landscape for many years, are under pressure from other manufacturers. The iPhone and iPod Touch has made Apple a very strong contender in the mobile gaming space. Rumours have been doing the rounds that Sony will be unveiling a “PlayStation Phone” to try and regain their market dominance. So when leaked specifications of Sony Ericsson Experia Play appeared yesterday , the world saw a slider phone that features buttons similar to those seen on the PSPgo.
The characteristics of the Sony Ericsson Experia Play:
- Form factor very similar to the new PSPGO
- 512 megabytes of RAM
- 4“ capacitive touchscreen, has a resolution 480 x 854 pixel
- 1GHz processor with graphics chip Adreno 205 dedicated to games
- 8MP camera with LED flash
- 1500 mAh Battery
- Sliding keyboard arrow keys, analog pad and function buttons, just like on the PS3 control
- Android 2.3 operating system
- Content will be available via the PlayStation Suite, with PSone games available to download.
The phone I suspect will (and hope) launch at the Mobile World Congress in mid February. There is just one problem. Why call it the Experia Play and not just Playstation Phone? I understand that all the recent smart phones from Sony Ericsson all have Experia in their name. Sony has a very reputable brand (PlayStation) and I think they missed a golden opportunity to make the phone have a very recognisable name.
