Any 90s gamer who owned a Playstation will be somewhat familiar with MediEvil. TheTim Burton-inspired classic action-adventure game featuring a skeletal hero resurrected from the dead became a beloved title upon release, but the franchise has been dormant for almost 20 years – up until now, that is. MediEvil has received a full remaster for the PS4, bringing back the iconic release and giving the modern gaming audience the chance to experience (or re-experience) the game.

Much like the recently released Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon trilogies, MediEvil has been given a new coat of paint in the form of updated graphics, 4K resolution, and an enhanced soundtrack, which has benefitted the game greatly. It looks and sounds like most modern games, but has an old-school charm to it thanks to some of the design staples remaining unchanged.

These are a double-edged sword though, as while the simplicity of running around, slashing your way through baddies, and fighting bosses is incredibly fun, the lack of more regular checkpoints, a far-more linear experience, and repetitive enemy types do remind us that games have come a long way since 1998.

But is it worth re-playing? Well, MediEvil will be an almost-certain buy for any fan with fond memories of the original, and for gamers who never did experience it (but know the limitations of what an older game like MediEvil would bring), there’s a lot to enjoy with the Remastered edition. And at a budget price, it’s not a hard sell.
