While day zero might have been moved out to 2019, Capetonians are still under pressure to save water wherever they can. Which is why local distillery Pienaar & Son decided to get creative with how they produced their gin. Inspired by Day Zero, the brand has announced that both of its classic gins have been upgraded to include a Drought Edition version.
Before being bottled, gin usually starts off at a strength of about 80 percent alcohol, 200 litres of water is then added to dilute it to 43 percent. However, Pienaar & Son noticed that most of their customers were pouring a double G&T prompting them to skip the step of adding water and bottle the original gin with 80 percent alcohol – a double shot in every tot.
According to Pienaar & Son, there is no drastic flavour variation with the drought-friendly gin when it is enjoyed in a typical gin and tonic, meaning that a single shot will taste the same as a double shot of 43 percent gin.
The Pienaar & Son Drought Edition gins are now available at any reputable liquor store or online – find it at the best price here.
