Samsung didn’t exactly have the best year in 2016. Their flagship device, the Galaxy Note 7, suffered from severe faulty batteries not once but twice. Since then there has been much speculation as to what was the root cause of the issue and now we finally have an answer.

Five months have passed since Samsung released the Galaxy Note 7, and now the global smartphone manufacturer have held an three-hour long press conference disclosing what caused the faulty batteries.

Samsung released two separate battery types for the Note 7; the initial battery and a replacement battery once the first one was found to be faulty. The first battery suffered from a fundamental design flaw that caused positive and negatives electrodes to make contact, thereby causing a short circuit which led to the batteries catching fire.
When Samsung issued a recall for the first batch of Note 7s a replacement battery was given to customers. Unfortunately, the demand for these batteries was so high that factories could not keep up with quality control. This led to sub-standard batteries making it onto the market, some of which where missing integral components and some that were not welded together properly.
In order to prevent another incident like this, Samsung have instituted a new eight-point quality control checklist for their future batteries. Furthermore, Samsung have pushed back the release date for the Note 8 from February until later this year.
