Mobile TV has been a white elephant in South Africa for some time. Mobile operators and third party software were seen as the only way for consumers to be able to watch TV on the go. Enter MultiChoice with the DSTV Drifta and many people are interested in watching sport on a mobile device.
I think that the Drifta is another game changer for MultiChoice. At the moment the service is free, but will cost R36 per month from 1 April 2011. It features the following channels:
- Africa Magic
- Channel O
- Trace TV
- The eNews Channel
- SuperSport Blitz
- SuperSport 1
- SuperSport 2
- SuperSport 3
- Cartoon Network
Currently the Drifta can be used with the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad by downloading the DSTV Decoder application. The Drifta is compatible with notebooks and desktop computers and connects via USB and WiFi. The one surprising thing about the Drifta is the size of the device. It fits very comfortably in your hand.Having seen the Drifta in action, I think mobile TV is going to be an industry to keep an eye on.
