The new chip on the block

This week PC users can experience the new CPU chip from Intel which is available in South Africa. However, currently it retails at quite a reasonable price.

 Intel’s i7 or “Nehalem” became available in the USA last week and India and Japan yesterday, and has since proved to be an excellent performer.

 

 

The i7 features impressive features such as “Quickpath interconnect” (QPI) which is Intel’s answer to AMD’s HyperTransport. The chip also supports an integrated memory controller and L3 cache, similar to what AMD have been offering for years.It seems that it was made to answer some questions posed by Intel’s biggest rival AMD, which is currently battling to stay a float.

 The integrated memory controller along with QPI and triple channel DDR3 memory has resulted in greatly improved memory bandwidth. This will make a noticeable difference to a wide range of applications.

 The Core i7 makes use of the latest 45nm processing standard, which greatly improves power consumption, heat generation and performance.

 Turbo Mode

Nehalem also features the “Turbo Mode” feature which allows the CPU to monitor and customize how many cores it uses, as well as how fast the CPU needs to be running at, depending on the application.

X58 motherboard platform

 Right now, Intel’s X58 chipset is the only platform supporting i7, possibly the biggest drawback experienced by potential i7’s buyers. Although X58 motherboards perform exceptionally well.

 The i7 is an only viable option to an elite group or groups of individuals which is in dire need of a new gadget.
