Old Faithful Geyser was named in 1870 by surveyor General H. D. Washburn, leader of the expedition that year. It's height varies from 106 to 184 feet, and the interval between eruptions varies from 33 to 120 minutes. The temperature before eruption is 240 degrees F, and during the eruption some 3700 to 8400 gallons of water are discharged. Yellowstone became the world's first National Park in 1872. Today it remains as one of the only large areas in the lower 48 states free of settlements, farms, fences and other developments.
