Description
British Queer Cinema addresses the representation of gays and lesbians, gay and lesbian actors and directors, and films both explicitly queer and those which lend themselves to a queer reading. This collection provides a historical perspective on queer cinema from the Time of the Closet to Gay Liberation, the AIDS generation, and New Queer Cinema. From the stereotypes and subversive sub-texts of earlier works to the complex visibility of queer identity in the seventies, eighties and nineties, the contributors discuss the varying contexts and deployments of homosexuality to define and deconstruct the cultural values of British popular cinema.
