Miles Ryan is deputy sheriff in New Bern, North Carolina. His wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago, and he grieves for her and worries about their son Jonah. Sarah Andrews, Jonah's second-grade teacher, moves to New Bern to start over. Sarah and Miles start to reach out to each other, and they fall in love.
