In the mid-1800s, mariners poured linseed oil or fish oil onto pieces of torn sail to make waterproof ponchos that would protect them against the rain and saltwater. Soon, the waxed canvas process was used to create strong duffel bags and tents for the military, as well as waterproof jackets and motorcycle clothing.
