How do I store breast milk?
- Â Â Â Express breast milk, using the Snookums Manual
or Electric Breast Pump.
- Â Â Â Wash hands well with soap and water before
handling the pre-sterilised bag.
- Â Â Â Inspect bags before use and dispose of if
damaged.
- Â Â Â For your reference, mark each bag with name,
date and time when you expressed the milk.
- Â Â Â Tear open horizontally along perforated edge,
at the top, in direction of the arrowhead.
- Â Â Â Hold opened bag with one hand and use the
other hand to pour freshly expressed breast milk into the bag slowly,
not filling the bag beyond 150ml.
- Â Â Â Before sealing bag, squeeze out air and use
fingers to zip close the bag.
- Â Â Â For best results, keep the bag upright, in
separate hard sided container until the milk has frozen.
- Â Â Â Store breast milk bag in the back of the
fridge for 24 hours or back of freezer for 3 months.
- Â Â Â Do not store Breast Milk Storage Bags in the
door of either the fridge or freezer.
How do I thaw frozen breast milk?
- Â Â Â Thaw/defrost the oldest breast milk first.
Check reference date and time written on each bag.
- Â Â Â Thaw the frozen milk overnight in the fridge,
or, for immediate use, immerse bag in warm (not hot) water until milk
is fully defrosted. Pour milk into sterilised feeding bottle, feeding
cup or spoon.
- Â Â Â Never thaw frozen milk at room temperature, as
this will enable bacteria to multiply in the milk.
- Â Â Â Never thaw breast milk in microwave oven or
boiling water. This will reduce milk's nutrients.
- Â Â Â Only warm milk, after milk has been
thawed/defrosted.
- Â Â Â Thawed milk can be stored in a fridge for up
to 24 hours.
- Â Â Â Discard any remaining milk. Don't refreeze
thawed or partially thawed breast milk.
How do I use breast milk bags?
- Â Â Â When ready to use, open the seal or cut off
the top corner with a clean pair of scissors and pour into a sterilised
feeding bottle, feeding cup or spoon.
- Â Â Â Before offering the milk to your baby, gently
swirl (do not shake) it to evenly distribute the creamy portion of the
milk that rises to the top of the container during storage.
- Â Â Â If the breast milk has separated into layers,
gently swirl the bag to mix the milk layers.
- Â Â Â Remember to always check the temperature of
the milk before feeding your baby.
Safety
- Â Â Â Always check temperature of the liquid on the
inside of your arm before feeding.
