Description
The protagonist, David Lurie, has an affair with a student and is subsequently denounced and called before a committee of inquiry. He resigns and retreats to his daughter's isolated farm. For a time, his daughter's influence and the natural rhythms of the farm seem to harmonize his discordant life. However, the balance of power in the country is shifting and David and Lucy become victims of a savage and disturbing attack. This brings into relief all the faultlines in their relationship, and they eventually divorce.
After years teaching Romantic poetry at the University of Cape Town, David Lurie, middle-aged and twice divorced has an impulsive affair with a student.
