Description
Finite element analysis is a mathematical technique that is used to solve problems involving structures, such as aircraft, bridges, and automobiles. This technique is based on the assumption that a physical system can be described by a set of finite elements. These elements can be thought of as small pieces of a physical object, and can be used to model the behavior of the entire object. Mathematical theory has been developed to help solve problems involving finite element analysis, and this theory is now quite extensive.
It is fitting that Book I of the series should be on the subject of finite elements. The finite element method is now well established as an engineering tool with wide application. At the same time is has attracted considerable attention from mathematicians over the last ten years, so that a large body of mathematical theory now exists.
