This book is a comprehensive history of Islamic civilizations from pre-Islamic times to the present. It covers the origins of Islam, the early Islamic empires, and Islamic religious, artistic, legal, and intellectual cultures. The book is divided into four parts, and part 1 covers pre-Islamic late antiquity, the beginnings of Islam, and the early Islamic empires. Part 2 covers the construction of Islamic religious communities and states in the Middle East from the 6th to the 15th century. Part 3 covers the history of Islamic North Africa and Spain from the 9th to the 19th century, and part 4 covers the impact of European commercial and imperial domination on Islamic societies and the development of the modern national state system. The book has been revised to incorporate the new scholarship and insights of the last 25 years.
