The narrative of the successful voyage of a French expedition to find the wrecks of La Perouse's Pacific expedition is recounted by Peter Dillon in two volumes, published in 1829. Dillon was a trader and adventurer who learned several Pacific languages and had contacts in the Santa Cruz Islands. He discovered the wrecks of La Perouse's expedition in 1826-7 and received a knighthood and annuity from the French government for his efforts. Volume 1 of the publication describes La Perouse's disappearance, Dillon's encounter with Fiji cannibals, and the first items identified from the wrecks. Volume 2 records Dillon's officially backed return to the wreck site, which was punctuated by violent quarrels, attempts at mutiny, and a stay in a Tasmanian jail.
