This book provides a concise overview of the politics and economy of Jordan. The book is written by Jordanian academics in geography, economics and political science, and supplemented by contributions from others specializing in Jordanian affairs. The book covers aspects of the Jordanian economic and political scene which have not yet been written about in English. The book discusses the effects of the 1991 Gulf war on Jordan, as well as the severed claims to the West Bank. The book provides a valuable overview of the Jordanian economy and politics.

Jordan's centre stage position in both Middle Eastern and Arab politics is considered in this book by means of contributions from Jordanian academics in geography, economics and political science accompanied by contributions from others specializing in Jordanian affairs. The work covers aspects of the Jordanian economic and political scene which have not yet been written about in English. Aspects of Jordan's consumer society are examined, including the question of foreign aid support, the role of the private sector, and the demand for consumer durables. The economic vulnerability which an open consumer society faces is illustrated in the chapter on the balance of payments and inflation. Despite economic and political problems, it is argued that Jordan has exhibited a certain economic resilience and that a national identity has been successfully fostered. Review: . . . offers concisely presented information from people with first-hand knowledge of their topics. It provides a baseline for considering post-1987 changes in Jordan--the severed claims to the West Bank, currency devaluation, and the effects of the 1991 Gulf war. - The Middle East Journal Eleven papers provide important insights into the Jordanian economic and political scene, and fill in the essential background against which current problems can be assessed. - Journal of Economic Literature
