The Green Revolution was a period of agricultural growth in the 1960s and 1970s that was met with criticism for its demands for optimal irrigation, intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and its damaging impact on social structures. In the early 1980s, a concerted approach to these criticisms was undertaken under the auspices of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). This book, first published in 1987, examines the recent achievements of the CGIAR and examines the Green Revolution concept from an "ecodevelopment" standpoint, with particular regard to the plight of the rural poor. The work is characterized by a concern for the ecological and social dimensions of agricultural development, which puts the emphasis on culturally compatible, labor absorbing and environmentally sustainable food production that will serve the long term needs of developing countries.
