Description
The robust australopithecines are a group of hominids that lived between 2.6 and 2.3 million years ago. They are a transitional group between the earlier australopithecines and the later Homo sapiens. Through their fossils, we can learn a lot about the origin, natural history, and ultimate extinction of an entire branch of the human fossil record.
In paleoanthropology the group of hominids known as the "robust" australopithecines has emerged as one of the most interesting. Through them we have the opportunity to examine the origin, natural history, and ultimate extinction of not just a single species, but of an entire branch in the hominid fossil record.
