Historical film has been an important genre the earliest silents. Lincoln, Jesus, the French Revolution, World War II - all have been repeatedly "represented" in film. But how does film represent the past, and specifically the part of the past we call "history"? Writing History in Film lays out the key issues facing the student and film scholar: what is historical narrative? What is factual narrative? How can film represent a historical character? What is the relation of film to memory?
