The movie is about a young man who is drafted into the Vietnam War and is disillusioned by the hippies he meets in New York. He eventually joins a commune in California and struggles to find his place in the counterculture movement.

Rock musical directed by Milos Forman charting the American counterculture movement of the 1960s that opposed the Vietnam War, starring John Savage and Treat Williams. Having been drafted by the Army naive farm hand Claude Bukowski (Savage) makes his way to New York where he encounters a commune of hippies, led by the charismatic George Berger (Williams), who discourage him from enlisting and expose him to an alternative lifestyle. However, Claude finds himself struggling to identify fully with the differing ideologies competing for his attention and his feelings for wealthy Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo) lead to further apprehension.
