Description
This unique book brings together for the first time a collection of inter-disciplinary socio-legal scholars whose work directly addresses and explores the richness and complexity of the interface between gender and childhood. Whilst there are numerous publications dealing with children and childhood from both legal and theoretical perspectives, within these approaches, the child is persistently represented and discussed as a gender neutral, or pre-gender, and pre-sexual object. In contrast, the aim of this volume in approaching child law from feminist perspectives is to explore two inter-related but distinct themes. Some of the chapters take as their starting point familiar aspects of traditional family and child law texts, such as residence and access disputes, child protection and childrens rights, while others explore aspects of childhood and childrens lives rarely addressed within these texts such as sexuality, education, images of children and childhood, cross-cultural and historical perspectives and criminal justice.
