BB guns are a type of air gun designed to fire spherical projectiles similar to shot pellets of approximately the same size. Modern BB guns usually have a barrel with a bore and caliber of 4.5 mm (0.177 in) and are available in many varieties. BB shot for modern BB guns is usually steel, plated either with zinc or copper to resist corrosion, and measure 4.3 to 4.4 mm (0.171 to 0.173 in) in diameter. Some manufacturers still makelead ballsof slightly larger diameter which are generally intended for use inrifled BB gun barrels.
What follows below is a very brief introduction and overview about types of guns and projectiles. Ultimately, classifications of the types and sizes of projectiles are primarily intended to guide hunters about what ammunition type and size are best suited to hunt different types of game. Nevertheless, some basic clarification for our customers may just come in handy.
What is a BB?
Note that the term BB refers to a particular size of spherical shot, not a type of thing. It was one size from a range of size-classifications of ball shot other sizes being B, BBB, OO, T, F and even others designated with numbers such as No.9, to No.1. Hence BB is one size from a list.
Shotguns use a variety of sizes of steel or lead shots (balls) packed in a shell. The term BB is derived from one shot grade used in shotgun shells, namely BB grade (.18 cal) lead shot. As time went on, BB balls were also used with slingshots, air rifles, and eventually even airsoft guns. Hence the term evolved from a size to a general term used for spherical steel projectiles. Today, .177 caliber (4.5mm) steel shot is the primary BB ammo.
BB is commonly confused with the term Ball Bearing, but a better term to use for it is Ball Bullet. Since size BB shots are most typically used for shooting small and medium-sized birds, BB shots are also called Birdshot. In fact, the various sizes of spherical metal ammunition used in Shotguns (and now more widely applied) are sometimes classified into groupings such as Leadshot sizes, Steelshot sizes and Buckshot sizes.
The nomenclature and groupings of shot sizes can differ from region to region though. Size BB may have a different technical meaning on different shot-size tables. The US system clusters lead and steel ball-shot together with No12 to No1 and codes B, BB, BBB and T. Birdshot is classified as sizes 4, 3, 2, 1 and sizes 0, 00 and 000. In these systems, generally the smaller the shot number (code), the larger the shot size. For example, shot sizes 0 and 000 are larger than shot sizes 4 or 3.
