Description
The article discusses the use of diatomaceous earth in fibreglass pool lining applications. The diatomaceous earth is mixed with resin and catalyst to form a putty that is used to fill holes and to smooth rough areas. Other uses of diatomaceous earth include as filter medium in DE water filters and as a deterrent against insects.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) powder is used in fibreglass pool lining applications. The DE powder is mixed with resin and catalyst hardner to form a putty that is used to fill holes and to smooth rough areas - e.g. under the coping or paving tiles on the edge of a pool
Other uses of DE:
Diatomaceous Earth is also used as filter medium in DE water filters
Diatomaceous Earth is effective and eco-friendly deterrent against any insect that has an exoskeleton, which includes fleas, mites, lice, ants, millipedes, earwigs, cockroaches, silverfish, bed bugs, crickets, centipedes, pill bugs, sow bugs, most beetles, fungus etc. While it does not kill them, many snails and slugs do not like to crawl over DE (and it slows them down), so it can be used as a protective barrier. Just sprinkle over soil. A light dusting of DE under chicken cages will even help to prevent mites and lice entering the area.
The 6 main components of fibreglass swimming pool linings are:
FIBREGLASS MATT that gives structure and strength to the pool lining
FIBREGLASS SURFACE TISSUE and/or printed MOSAIC TISSUE SHEETS (Optional) to mark the waterline and steps of swimming pools
POOL RESIN is used to laminate fibreglass matt and surface tissue together to form a watertight lining
FIBREGLASS TOP COAT: SKYBLUE or WHITE TOP COAT is used as final coat for the entire interior surface of a pool to protect the fibreglass matt against water, while CLEAR TOP COAT is used as laminating and protective paint on areas where MOSAIC TISSUE SHEETS / MOTIFS are placed
FIBREGLASS PUTTY POWDER (DE) are mixed with resin and catalyst to form a putty to fill holes and uneven areas
FIBREGLASS CATALYST HARDENER that is mixed in a small quantity with TOP COATS & RESINS
Fibreglass linings are applied to smooth plastered concrete or old marblite swimming pool linings to make it water-tight.
Acetone is used for cleaning paint brushes, rollers etc.
WARNING:
Always work in a well ventilated areas with fibreglass and related materials
Wear protective clothing; eye protection and mask (respirator)
