Description
This is a description of a traditional watercolor gold size, made with natural gums and yellow color. It is used for gilding or repairing, with gold leaf or bronze powder on frames, paper or glass. The size is stirred gently with the end of a paintbrush, and paint is applied over the area to be gilded with a brush. It is allowed to dry, which may take between 10 to 20 minutes. If the size dries out too much, it can be reactivated by breathing directly over the applied size.
Traditional size for illumination. Made with natural gums. Yellow
colour. For gilding or repairing, with gold leaf or bronze powder
on frames, paper or glass. Stir the water gold size gently
with the end of a paintbrush. A vigorous shake will introduce air
bubbles, which you should avoid. Paint over the area to be
gilded with a brush. Allow to dry, which may take between 10 to 20
minutes. While it is still tacky apply the gold. If the gold size
dries out too much, then its stickiness can be reactivated by
breathing directly over the applied size.
