Description

The Stranger's mission is to discover whether human beings are essentially good or evil. In the village, the Stranger befriends a young woman, Miss Prym, and they start to develop a close relationship. Miss Prym is curious about the Stranger and asks him many questions about his mission. The Stranger begins to feel like he is being watched and he starts to have doubts about his mission. Eventually, the Stranger realizes that he is being watched by the Devil. The Devil is trying to convince the Stranger to give up his mission and to go back to the city. The Stranger eventually overcomes the Devil's temptations and continues with his mission. The novel ends with the Stranger leaving the village and going back to the city.
