Description
Theanine is a natural amino acid found in green tea. It is believed to work for anxiety by increasing the levels of GABA and serotonin. L-Theanine is an analog of glutamate, which is an exitatory neurotransmitter. Increased glutamine levels is associated with neuronal death during periods of cerebral ichaemia. L-Theanine has antagonistic effects on glutamate and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and may be neuroprotective. L-Theanine affects catecholamines that can cause vasoconstriction and thus may be useful in treat hypertension. This is attributed to a decrease in norepinephrine which leads to a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. L-Theanine might also prevent atherosclerosis by inhibiting the lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoproteins.
Theanine is relatively uncommon Amino Acid found in Green Tea.
