The Ice Balloon is a book about the Norwegian sloop, Fram, and the Swedish explorer, S. A. Andree. Andree set out to find the North Pole in 1897, but he died while trying to do so. Wilkinson tells the story of Andree's attempt and the golden age of polar exploration. He also tells the story of other explorers and their ill-fated expeditions. Wilkinson's writing is so flawless and engaging that I'd read him on a packed subway at rush hour. The Ice Balloon is a well-written book that tells a fascinating story.
